TRAVEL · PACKING CHECKLIST
The family vacation packing checklist
A two-week countdown that covers reservations, packing, home preparation, and the easy-to-forget last-minute items.
Good packing begins before the suitcase comes out. Work backward from departure day so decisions happen while there is still time to solve them. Keep one shared master list, then give each traveler a short personal list.
Two weeks before: lock down the trip
- Confirm transportation, lodging, dates, check-in instructions, and cancellation terms.
- Check required identification and travel documents for every traveler.
- Review the expected weather and the activities that need special clothing or equipment.
- Refill necessary prescriptions with enough time for questions or delays.
- Arrange pet, plant, mail, and home care.
One week before: pack by category
Estimate clothing by trip day, not by “what might be nice.” Build each person’s list from the same categories: daily clothing, sleepwear, weather layer, shoes, toiletries, medication, and one comfort or entertainment item. Add shared items only once.
Personal
- Clothing and shoes
- Toiletries
- Medication
- Chargers and headphones
- Comfort item
Shared
- Documents
- First-aid basics
- Sunscreen or weather gear
- Laundry bag
- Snacks and refillable bottles
48 hours before: prepare the house
- Use or discard food that will spoil and take out trash.
- Charge devices and download tickets, maps, and entertainment needed offline.
- Tell the appropriate person your itinerary and how to reach you.
- Adjust lights, thermostat, deliveries, and security settings appropriately.
- Put keys, wallets, documents, and departure-day medicine in one launch spot.
Departure day: use one final sweep
Check bedsides, bathrooms, outlets, the refrigerator, and the charging area. Confirm doors and windows, then photograph anything you commonly worry about after leaving. Count bags before loading and again at every major transfer point.
